Welcome 2014!

Here we are at the beginning of a brand new year…Hope you are all warm, wherever you are!  Canada and parts of the United States have been thrown into a deep freeze that seems never ending.  Of course, the usual fear mongering is all over the media with regards to getting that flu shot.  Recently, on the news, there was also a segment trying to de-bunk all the home remedies that people use to “cure” themselves of the common cold.  While where may not be a cure per say, there are things that people do to help alleviate symptoms, ie: chicken noodle soup, uggle muggle (juice of orange, lemon and grapefruit, heated up, add pure honey and 1.5 ounces of your favourite brandy) and off to bed you go to sweat it out! (That last one is my favourite!)  Fresh ground ginger, boiled with half a squeezed lemon and honey to taste.  (Really good for sore throats!)  Oreganol, and of course, the massive doses of vitamin d.  Yes Vitamin D, not C!  Ever wonder why we are less likely to suffer from colds and flu in the summer?  Could it be that perhaps, the sunshine gives us that added immunity??   Great article by Dr. Zoltan Rona on the benefits of Vitamin D.  He states that as reported by Dr. John Cannell, director of the Vitamin D Council that high dose of Vitamin D (50,000IU) be consumed for 3 days at the first sign of cold or flu.  Dr. Reinhold Vieth PhD, researcher at the University of Toronto notes that vitamin D toxicity begins at 40,000IU daily only after many weeks of use.  Taking 10,000IU daily for months at a time provided there is no sun exposure is perfectly safe.  Blood levels can be done periodically to verify this.  The blood test is a 25-hydroxy for vitamin D, can be ordered by your doctor, however, this is no longer covered by the Ontario Health Plan.  Our government is not keen on keeping people healthy, as there is more money in being sick than well!  Also why Naturopaths are not covered by the health plan.  Health care is not as profitable as sick care!

That’s enough ranting for the moment.  In short, every body is different.  What works for one person may not work for another…and if you are going to try something “out of the ordinary”, then it is always a good idea to check with a reputable natural health professional.

In closing, I will leave you with this little known FACT:  More people die everyday in the U.S. and Canada by taking their prescription medicines CORRECTLY than ever die from the seasonal flu.  Wonder if they will ever come out with a shot to protect us from THAT!!!

Keep warm and KEEP INFORMED!!!   Question, Question, Question…and Research, Research, Research!
